#WineWednesday: How to Make In-Flight Sangria + Two More Cocktails

Consider this Airplane Bartending 101.

An in-flight glass of wine can hit the spot and help you relax in the air, especially if you aren't a fan of flying. But let's be honest, the complimentary wine on most airplanes is not great and usually only one white and one red are offered. With a few extra add-ons, you can play bartender and turn that mediocre wine into a refreshing drink. Here's what you'll need to make sangria in the air, plus two more cocktails you can make yourself with a few supplies from the flight attendant's drink cart.

Skyline Sangria

orange juice

variety of fruit (optional)

Ask your flight attendant for a cup of ice, red wine, cranberry juice and orange juice. Fill the cup about two-thirds full of wine and splash in cranberry and orange juice to taste. Traditional sangria usually has simple syrup or triple sec and brandy in it, so the cranberry and orange juice will mimic that sweetness. If you want to grab a fruit cup from the airport to bring with you, you can pop in a few pieces of fruit for extra flavor. White wine also works as a substitute for red.

Turbulence Toddy

hot water

black tea packet

airplane bottle of whiskey

packet of honey or packet of sugar

lemon (optional)

Laura James

A hot toddy is a great cocktail to make if you have a sore throat or prefer a hot drink. Let the tea steep for a few minutes, and then pour in whiskey to taste. A packet of honey is preferred and will help coat the throat, but if your flight attendant doesn't have honey, a packet of sugar will suffice. If available, lemon juice will take this hot toddy to the next level.

Flight Russian

airplane bottle of coffee liqueur

airplane bottle of vodka

2 creams

Laura James

To make a white Russian, start with a cup of ice, and then add in vodka to taste and about half the bottle of coffee liqueur. Add in two packets of cream or half and half to finish off this creamy and sweet cocktail.
